for Oakland Art Murmur!

Sharing the Landscape of Oakland

Through a grant from the City of Oakland Public Art Program's Open Proposals, City Canvas will work with eighth grade students at Westlake Middle School near Lake Merritt. As part of a leadership course, the students will be working with the community and creating art that explores their identities as youth and as Oakland residents, and examines how they fit into the broader civic community.

Signal box art

Here are a few of the concepts we submitted as part of the proposal process for Oakland Open Proposals.

These, of course, are just artist renderings. The finished installations will be designed collaboratively through a community process. You can see some of that process in first pane in this second concept.

Check out the difference between the third and fourth pane - what a before and after!

Scoping out signal box canvases

City Canvas members and volunteers biked around Westlake to map out the locations of signal boxes, scope the amount of tagging, and assess which would make the best canvases.
